Canadian miners rescued -- Safe thanks to emergency supplies
Rescuers Bring Up All 72 Canadian Miners
Rescuers retrieved all 72 central Canadian potash miners who were trapped underground by a fire and survived until Monday by using oxygen, food and water stored in subterranean emergency chambers.
I've wondered, in the face of the two recent US mine disasters, why the mines don't put in emergency supplies for the miners. It'd be easy enough, and comparatively cheap, to make boxes with oxygen tanks, water, MREs, and maybe even a few space blankets, and deploy them throughout a mine. The Canadians were doing it. Why aren't we?
