"Mermaid baby" to start surgery soon

Little Milagros Cerron will soon undergo the first of a long series of operations to repair her rare birth defect.

Milagros was born with sirenomelia, or "mermaid syndrome," a rare disorder that causes the legs to be fused along their entire length. This syndrome is usually fatal because of the accompanying internal abnormalities. Original reports said that Milagros was the second surviving child with sirenomelia, but the CNN article says she's the third. Tiffany Yorks is the well-known survivor, treated at Shriners Hospital. I've not gotten any lead on who the other child might be.
